Courriel à Lilly

Dodo la veille : CouchSurfing chez Aiden, Bullet Tree Falls

Bonjour.

People are actually sad when you leave. »

Le courriel envoyé à Lilly il y a quelques jours résume mon expérience du Bélize. Je l’ai tout de même trafiqué quelque peu pour y ajouter des éléments que j’avais oubliés.

Début du courriel…

Holà Amigos !!!

When did you write this ? We are still in Bélize, Monday 12th of December, in Placencia tonight and going to San Ignacio tomorrow. There’s a CouchSurfer hosting us in Bullet Tree Falls, so that is where we’ll be hanging out for a couple days.

Maybe you could join us there… the guy seems super laid back : he’s house-sitting a camping and cabanas type of thing. We’ll see when we get there.

We’ll be crossing to Guatemala sometime in the next week.

Where are you ? Are you in Bélize already ?

Good spots in Bélize. Nothing much really, other than relaxing everywhere.
- Gen and I really enjoyed Sartaneja for the cheap and friendly backpacker (Backpackers’ Paradise) and the non touristy side of the fishermen’s village. A real place !
- Hopkins was a good stop if you want to see a Garifuna village.
- Something special you could do is to get to a mayan village somewhere in the deep South. That would be cool. See the true village life and talk with people. I just don’t know where is the accomodation, but there are, that is for sure.
- We enjoyed Punta Gorda in the last two days, but that was only for relaxing because there’s nothing else there. No backpackers, but we found hotels for less than US$25 a night, which was ok for us after spending a week in the jungle where we did some WWOOFing.
- You should be able to see hawler monkeys in one of the places you’ll visit. This is fun to see. If you don’t get to see any through your other activities, you could always go to the Baboon Sanctuary. We went, we saw monkeys, but the experience was cousi-cousa (bof).- Everybody will tell you to go to the cayes and I guess you’ll want to go and see so that you don’t wonder for ever if you’ve missed out on the best. We’ve been to Caye Caulker, snorkeled half a day and came back the next day. I understand if you go, but nothing that you should not miss. Also, it’s not as expensive as people say it is.

We moved fast in Bélize : everything is so close.

We skipped Sittee River where we wanted to sleep at the Glover’s Guesthouse. From there, there’s the possibility to go on a almost desert island for a week (we thought of it, but decided no). Camping is US$99 per person for the week with kitchen (if you bring your own food). They have cabanas too.

That is it for my advice.
Gen says Hello.

Tell me where you guys are and we should try to meet up again.
I heard you had a good time in Cuba. Good for you.

Hey. What are you doing during the holiday season ?
We figure that it will be hectic everywhere with a lot of tourists.
So we found out about this spanish school really close to the Belize-Guatemala border.
It is called Bio-Itza, it is cooperatively ran and they offer homestay for complete immersion.
That way, we get to not move during the holiday season, plus we get to live it with a local family ! Isn t it amazing ?!!!
You should come ! Just saying. :)
